The Describer’s Apprentice

Forty-four seconds of nothing.

Audio description is the narration that tells blind viewers what is happening on screen, written into the gaps between dialogue. Here is one minute of a film. The grey is speech. The gap is what a blind viewer gets unless a describer writes something into it.

Be honest! Eh— be tender.
Remind her what love is.
...and, action!

12.0s from inside that gap. The film is still playing; nobody is speaking.

Play both. The difference is the entire product.

Deciding what goes in that gap takes years of judgment that was never written down. This tool sits with a describer while they work, asks why at the moments that matter, and turns their answers into a course for whoever comes next.

What it does

  1. 1

    It watches a describer work

They describe a clip the way they normally would. It stays quiet while they watch and type, and asks at natural pauses — about something actually on screen, because a vision model is reading the picture alongside them.

  2. 2

It reads their approach back to them

At the end it explains how they work, in their own words, and will not close until they agree it has got it right. The result is a Work Map: every rule pinned to the moment on screen that produced it.

  3. 3

    It teaches the next describer

A new describer works a clip the expert never touched. Every line is checked before it saves, and anything that breaks a rule comes back in the describer’s own words rather than as a lint error.

And then it checks whether any of it worked

Every other check asks whether the describer followed the rules. A line can be objective, well timed, and break nothing \u2014 and still lose the scene. So a separate listener gets only what a blind viewer gets, the dialogue and the descriptions, and is asked what happened.

It was asked

What kind of creature is Franck?

It answered

I was not told.

Four lines had been written about that gap. Every one passed every rule. Not one of them mentioned that he is a sheep.

Start

Any number of describers can be captured. Each one produces their own Work Map, and a new describer learns from whichever of them they are training under.
